Anaheim Tidbits
In 1857, Anaheim started out a colony of German vintners and farmers. Originally, a man named George Hansen surveyed 200 acres which is currently known as the downtown area of the community, bounded by West, East, South, and North Streets. The name of the community is a composition of heim which translates into home from German and Ana from the close by Santa Ana River. This area was considered their home by the river by the early settlers.Their lifestyle and occupation was farming. Grapes for wine were one the crops grown during the first few decades. However, during the 1870's, a plague devastated the vineyards and groves of citrus trees were planted in their place. Anaheim was where the first commercial oranges in Orange County were grown. Other crops included chili peppers and walnuts.
These first settlers were musicians, artists, writers, and farmers. The first public buildings were an opera house and a school rather than administrative facilities. The year 1876 brought the incorporation of Anaheim as a city with a population of 881 people.
For the next several decades, the small rural community grew steadily but slowly. The population had increased to 5,526 people by 1920. The growers in the east were linked to Anaheim by the building of the Santa Fe depot in 1887, which provided critical markets for their golden crops.
All throughout the first half of the 1900's, the small community lifestyle continued in Anaheim. The hub of activity in the community was Center Street, where people gathered to celebrate local festivities and events and to mark such international and national events as man's first step on the moon, the assignation of president John Kennedy, and the end of both World Wars. The population of the community had increased to 14,556 people by1950. However, it wouldn't be long before the small, sleepy would be propelled into the modern era.
California experienced its third population explosion between the late 1940's and early 1950's. The first had occurred during the Gold Rush some 100 years earlier. The second occurred during the late 1800's when there was easy and inexpensive transportation to the West as the result of a rate war between the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific Railroads.
The industrial and economic boom that came after WW II hit Southern California and sparked this third wave of population growth. There were thousands of tract homes and new businesses in what was once remote suburban regions as the nation enjoyed a tidal wave of optimism. Overnight, roads and highways were paved and transported Angelinos' off to emerging communities that the year before had been a farm that somebody owned.
Walt Disney created Mickey Mouse Park, which would offer family activities to be enjoyed together. There was a fish stocked lake that allowed children and their parents to enjoy fishing together while sitting on the shore. In the center of the lake there was an island that boats could row around in and children could explore. The small community American experience would be brought to modern families by a replica of a conventional Main Street and a bandstand and a carousel. One of Walt Disney's favorite hobbies was a miniature train, which was a special feature of the park.
After being denied to build his park by the community of Burbank, Walt Disney started to make his project acceptable by revising his plans. New ideas and concepts were filling his mind as he was working. In one area of the park children would dream of the world of the future with frontiers in space and another would be dedicated to the American frontier. However, the more he considered hi plans, the more he realized the Burbank location of only 11 acres wouldn't be adequate to contain his new vision.
One day, on the newly paved asphalt of the Santa Ana freeway, which was two lanes, Walt Disney headed south in his car. As he left downtown Los Angeles, while driving he noticed that white clouds came out from underneath the blanket of smog and the sky became a deep blue from the previous brownish haze, and businesses and homes grew farther and farther apart. It was almost as if he were transported back to the Midwest when he finally reached Orange County. Interrupted only occasionally by a modest farmhouse, stretched out before him the open farmland was scented with the sweet fragrant perfume of orange blossoms for many miles. The distinctive gingerbread architecture of the Victorian style homes were common and seemed to be an odd transplant from another era. However, it was an era that Walt felt comfortable in.
Anaheim was much the same as Marceline, Missouri, which is the boyhood home of Walt Disney. It was like coming home again as he drove through the small community. He had found a place for his magical park right in the middle of the orange groves. These days, Anaheim is a thriving community and a wonderful place to raise a family and to work, play, and live.
