Kirkland Tidbits
Kirkland is located on the Eastside of Lake Washington and is a suburb of Seattle in King County. According to the census of 2012, the population of Kirkland was 84,430 people. This made the community 12th largest community in Washington State and the sixth largest community in King County. The community of Kirkland added about 33,000 residents by annexation in 2011. The community features a collection of bronze art, mainly bronze sculptures, beaches, public parks, a 400 seat performing arts center, art galleries, and many different restaurants.A steel tycoon from Briton named Peter Kirk was the namesake of the community Kirkland. In the 1880's, Mr. Kirk arrived in the Northwest looking for new opportunities to develop. On the eastern shore of lake Washington, Mr. Kirk dreamed of developing a something like a western Pittsburgh. He considered this to be a bustling new community whose primary economy would be focused on the production of steel.
Mr. Kirk was always and enterprising businessman decided to auction off his manor and property back in England and arrived in America in order to make his fortune in 1886. He located the Pacific Northwest. Mr. Kirk had big dreams, like many entrepreneurs during this time, especially for the land by the waters of lake Washington, just east of Seattle. He believed it was the ideal location to build a steel community that would support a mill.
Several prominent businessmen and Mr. Kirk built the Moss Bay Steel and Iron Works in 1880. In 1892, the steel mill was completed but failed during the panic of 1893. The downturn in the economy stopped the steel mill dead, and closed without ever producing any steel. Nevertheless, they believed that a shop canal would soon connect between Puget Sound and Seattle, which would open Lake Washington to the Pacific Rim trade and wanted to tap into the rich mineral resources of Snoqualmie Pass. Although it was too late to save Mr. Kirk's dream, a ship canal to Puget Sound and rail line to Snoqualmie Pass and a ship canal to Puget Sound were both constructed. Mr. Kirk retired and relocated to the Sn Juan Islands after his dreams failed him.
The year 1905 brought the incorporation of Kirkland with a population of 400 people and in spite of the closing of the steel mill. The new Kirkland City Council had some primary concerns such as the improvement of the Lake Washington shoreline, buildings, and roads.
In the early history of Kirkland, the two most successful industries were ship building and wool milling. In 1892, the first wool mill in Washington State was developed in Kirkland. The mill produced wool products for the US military during WW I and for the prospectors during the Alaska Gold Rush.
However, the small community survived the unsteady economy. Kirkland rebounded by depending on ship building and wool milling, rather than on steel. In 1888, the first community of the Eastside was Kirkland. Kirkland became the transportation hub of the Eastside and had ferries transporting goods and commuters during the 1900's.
For 18 hours a day, the ferries ran continuously between Seattle and the city dock at Marina Park. In 1940, the demise of the lake ferries was complete with the opening of the Floating Bridge across Lake Washington.
It was with the construction of the ferries on the Lake Washington waterfront that the shipbuilding industry in Kirkland really began. The majority of these ferries were either repaired or built in the region around Kirkland for two decades. Lake Washington was opened to ocean going vessels by the opening of the ship canal in 1917. Warships fir the United States Navy were being built by the Lake Washington Shipyard in Kirkland during the 1940's. On what is currently known as Carillon Point, over 25 warships were built during WW II.
The adjoining community of Houghton was a separate community for the majority of its history. However, the interests of Kirkland and Houghton started converging by the 1960's. The residents of Houghton decided to become part of Kirkland as one community that had a population of 13,500 people in 1968.
The City of Kirkland is continually growing. The neighborhood of Totem Lake became a portion of Kirkland in 1974. In 1988, the neighborhoods of North Rose Hill, South Rose Hill, and South Juanita joined Kirkland, which brought the community to its present population. These were the largest annexations undertaken in the state in nearly 20 years at that time, which added 16.000 new residents as well as three and one half square miles to the community.
Although it didn't happen exactly as he had imagined it, the dream of Peter Kirk for a community on the eastern shore of Lake Washington has been fulfilled. These days, Kirkland is a thriving, flourishing, and vibrant city with over 80,000 people. These days, Kirkland is a community of more than 80,000 people with the only downtown on the waterfront in the area.
