Sequim Tidbits
There was evidence of the presence of hunters that existed here 14.000 years ago in an area near Sequim. Fossils were discovered here at an archaeological dig in the late 1970s. The discovery of a mastodon bone with a bone point embedded within it was the first hunting weapon that was found to date back to the pre-Clovis period.Before the arrival of the Europeans, Native American tribes lived in the area. They eventually disbanded in the early 1900s. Both George Vancouver and Manuel Quimper explored the coastal area of the region in the 1790s.
In the 1850s, the first European settlers came to the Dungeness Valley. Sequim's land along the Dungeness River turned into fertile farmlands, but the area left over stays as an arid prairie. Water was first brought to the prairie by way of irrigation canals in the 1890s, which allowed for the farmlands to expand. Dairy farms, which were small farms, spread throughout the area around the town for many decades. The city's population recently exploded and attracts many retirees. Port Angeles' first railroad was built by Ismael Fillion. It had a locomotive that was home-built. It ran on wooden rails. The first train trip for passengers that ran from Port Angeles to Sequim was back in 1915. The train went on to Port Townsend in 1916. This was where a boat took its passengers to destinations such as Seattle. Sequim Logging Company's first locomotive was unloaded on the west side of Sequim Bay from a barge. It was walked down the road to Blyn, the place where the company's railroad was located. Sequim's train depot began service in 1916 and kept running until 1967. In order to put in the entrance to Sequim Avenue, the depot was destroyed in 1967.
In 1913, the Town Clerk of Sequim was Jess S. Mantle. The Mayor of the city was Jilson White. The ordinances first put into action set the time and location of the meetings of the Council. The location was set at a school auditorium. The time was set as the first Wednesday after the second Monday of each month. It was set at 8 pm. There were three people that were employed by the city. They each had a set salary per month. The Town Marshal earned $15 per month. The Town Treasurer earned $50 per month. The Town Clerk earned $15 month.
In 1914, Jess Mantle was the Treasurer/Clerk. The mayor was H.P. Barber. Many licensing fees were set by the City. Solicitors and peddlers had to pay a fee of $10 per day. Temporary stores had to pay a fee of $25 per day. Depending on the number of shows, carnivals had to pay a fee of $25-$40 per day. Bowling alleys had to pay $15 per year. Concerts, operas, theaters, exhibitions, shows, or other public amusements were charged either $150 per year or $5 per day. Even taxis were licensed. Pool tables and billiard tables were charged $5 to $10 per table. Dog tags cost $2 every year. It was against the law to discharge firearms or carry concealed weapons in Sequim. The speed limit back then was only 15 mph. The fines for speeding varied from $1 to $10.
One attraction to this area is the Roosevelt elk. There is a herd of elk in Sequim that brings people to come and watch the elk. The third weekend in July brings the Sequim Lavender Weekend. Sequim has grown famous for the growing of lavender. Featuring both cultural and natural exhibits, the Museum and Arts Center has many interesting displays, including a mastodon mural that is mounted with artifacts, bones, and a video on the excavation. A little north of the city, there is the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge. This wildlife refuge contains a hike to the New Dungeness Lighthouse and the Dungeness Spit. There is a Replica of George Washington's home called the George Washington Inn. It is along the Strait of Juan de Fuca off the Highway 101.
Sequim falls within the Mediterranean climate zone. Due to its relatively cool temperatures, Sequim also falls within an oceanic climate. Very little snowfall, if any, hits Sequim. Sequim gets very little rainfall during the year. Summer temperatures are easy to endure here in Sequim. The highest recorded temperature was 99 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature was recorded back in 1941. The lowest temperature recorded was -3 degrees Fahrenheit.
According to the census of 2010, there were 3,340 households, 6,606 people, and 1,626 families living in Sequim. 1,046 per square mile was the population density of Sequim. The racial breakdown of the city was .4% African American, 1.9% Asian, 1.2% Native American, 91.3% White, .1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from two or more races, and 1.7% from other races. Latinos and Hispanics of any race made up 4.8% of the population.
